Frontier Market Debt: the benefits of an absolute return approach

We believe the best risk-adjusted opportunities and alpha are found where others are not looking. Our conviction is that EM is largely consensus driven, with crowded positioning leading to correlated and high beta outcomes for investors. Conversely, Frontier Markets exhibit inefficiencies due to investor misconceptions and their idiosyncrasies, presenting distinct opportunities. A disciplined focus on downside protection via an absolute return approach can generate strong, uncorrelated returns for investors.

Presenter's profile

Gareth Payne is Head of Credit & Alternative Fixed Income Client Portfolio Managers at Pictet Asset Management. Before joining Pictet in 2019 Gareth was the Client Portfolio Manager for Man GLG’s Credit and Convertibles business with responsibility across both alternative and long-only strategies. Asset-Based Finance: Diversified & Uncorrelated Returns in a Private Credit Market That’s Too Big to Ignore

Private Credit continues to demonstrate lower correlation with equities and high yield

markets, whilst providing a reliable income stream and reducing overall portfolio volatility

- Whilst Direct Lending has fueled the growth of the private credit market, investor capital is

increasingly seeking diversification from corporate exposures

- Asset based lending is $6.3 trillion in size and growing with lending to the real economy

undergoing the same fundamental shift from banks to non-bank lenders in areas including

residential & commercial properties, autos, commercial equipment, aviation leasing & energy transition

- These collateralized cash-flowing assets create a diversified, downside protected, short

duration portfolio, which is uncorrelated to broader markets and that offers a stable return.

- AB CarVal has a 38-year global presence in the space, investing ~$150bn through economic

cycles and market dislocations

Presenter's profile

Mr. Kayello is a director for AB CarVal. Based in London, Mr Kayello is

responsible for capital formation and investor relations in Europe and the

Middle East. Prior to joining AB CarVal, he was on the Credit sales team at
